It is one of the most common questions we get: “Can I put my CBD oil in my vape pen?” The short answer is no. CBD oil drops and CBD vape liquids are made in completely different ways, for completely different uses. Here is why mixing them up is a bad idea, and what to do instead.
The short answer
- Do not put CBD oil or a CBD tincture in a vape pen. It is made to be swallowed, not heated and inhaled.
- Oil can clog or burn the coil and damage your device.
- Inhaling oils can harm your lungs and has been linked to a rare condition called lipoid pneumonia.
- If you want CBD that works quickly, hold oil drops under your tongue for 60 to 90 seconds instead.
CBD tinctures vs CBD oil vs CBD vape liquid
| CBD oil / tincture | CBD vape liquid (e-liquid) | |
|---|---|---|
| Made with | CBD extract in a carrier oil such as MCT or hemp seed oil (traditional tinctures use alcohol) | CBD in propylene glycol (PG) and/or vegetable glycerine (VG) |
| Designed for | Taking by mouth, often under the tongue | Heating in a vape device and inhaling |
| Consistency | Thick, oily | Thin, designed to wick into a coil |
| Regulated as | Food supplement | E-cigarette product |
| Safe to vape? | No | Only in a suitable device, if the product is legal and tested |
The word “tincture” causes a lot of the confusion. Traditionally, a tincture is a herbal extract made with alcohol. Today, most CBD products sold as tinctures are actually oils, and they are labelled for oral use. Neither an alcohol tincture nor an oil is designed to be vaped.
What is actually in a bottle of CBD oil?
A typical CBD oil has just two main ingredients: a CBD extract and a carrier oil. The carrier oil, usually MCT oil (from coconut) or hemp seed oil, helps your body absorb the CBD and makes it easy to measure in drops. Some products add natural flavourings.
These ingredients are chosen because they are safe to eat. None of them is designed to be heated in a coil and breathed in. That is the core reason CBD oil and vaping do not mix: it is not that the CBD is a problem, it is that the oil carrying it belongs in your digestive system, not your lungs.
Every batch of our CBD oils is independently tested for its CBD content, THC, heavy metals and pesticides, and the lab report is on each product page. Whatever product you choose, from us or anyone else, check that report before you buy.
Why you should never vape CBD oil
It can damage your vape
Vape coils are designed to wick thin liquids. Oil is too thick to wick properly, so the coil runs dry, burns and produces harsh, acrid vapour. Most people who try it end up with a ruined coil or tank.
It can harm your lungs
Your lungs are not designed to deal with oil droplets. Inhaling oils has been linked to lipoid pneumonia, a rare but serious form of lung inflammation. Heating oils at high temperatures can also produce irritating by-products.
The EVALI warning
In 2019, the United States saw an outbreak of serious lung injuries linked to vaping, known as EVALI. Investigators found the main culprit was vitamin E acetate, an oily additive used in illegal THC vape cartridges. It is a stark reminder that oils and thickening agents do not belong in vapes.
Are CBD vapes legal in Ireland?
CBD e-liquids are not covered by food law. They fall under the rules for e-cigarettes and refill containers. Irish drugs law still applies, though: any vape containing THC is illegal in Ireland. Be especially careful with vapes sold as “THC”, “HHC”, “THCP” or “Delta-8”. These are not CBD products, are often untested, and the HSE has issued warnings about products like these. Read our full guide: is CBD oil legal in Ireland?. In Ireland, HHC has been a controlled drug since 29 July 2025.
Why do people want to vape CBD?
Understanding why people reach for a vape helps find a better alternative:
- Speed. Inhaled products act quickly. Oil held under the tongue is the next fastest option and avoids the lung risks.
- Habit. For people who already vape, it feels familiar. A gummy or a few drops at a set time each day can become just as easy a routine.
- Taste. Some people dislike the earthy taste of hemp oil. Gummies and capsules avoid this completely.
- Convenience. A vape fits in a pocket. So does a tub of gummies or a 10ml bottle of oil.
What if you have already vaped CBD oil?
If you have tried vaping CBD oil once or twice, stop, and clean or replace the coil and tank. Most people will have no lasting problems. However, if you develop a cough that will not go away, chest pain, shortness of breath or a fever after vaping any oil, see your GP and tell them exactly what you vaped. In an emergency, call 112 or 999.
Signs oil has got into your vape
- a burnt, acrid taste even with a new e-liquid
- gurgling or spitting from the mouthpiece
- oily residue around the coil, tank or airflow holes
- very little vapour, or the device repeatedly shows a coil error
If you notice any of these, replace the coil and clean the tank thoroughly, or replace the device.
Safer ways to take CBD
| Method | Starts working | Lasts about | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oil under the tongue | 15 to 45 minutes | 4 to 6 hours | Fast effect, adjustable drop by drop |
| Gummies | 30 to 90 minutes | 6 to 8 hours | Set amount, tasty, discreet |
| Capsules | 45 to 90 minutes | 6 to 8 hours | No taste at all |
| Cream | 15 to 30 minutes | 2 to 4 hours | Applying to one area |
If speed is what draws you to vaping, try holding your oil under your tongue for a full 60 to 90 seconds before swallowing. Some of the CBD is absorbed through the lining of your mouth, which is why it works faster than anything you swallow. Read more in how long does CBD take to work?.
How to take CBD oil properly
- Shake the bottle.
- Fill the dropper and count your drops under your tongue. Most people start with 5 drops of a 10% oil.
- Hold for 60 to 90 seconds, then swallow.
- Avoid eating or drinking for a few minutes.
- Take it at the same time each day, and keep the same amount for a week before changing anything.
If you take any medication, speak to your GP or pharmacist before using CBD. Our CBD dosing guide has more detail.
If you already vape
If you vape nicotine and want to try CBD, keep them separate. Use your vape for the e-liquid it was designed for, and take CBD as drops, gummies or capsules. Never add CBD oil, or any other oil, to a nicotine e-liquid.
Frequently asked questions
Can you put CBD oil in a vape pen?
No. CBD oil drops are made with a carrier oil such as MCT or hemp seed oil, which is meant to be swallowed, not heated and inhaled. Putting it in a vape can damage the device and may harm your lungs.
What happens if you vape CBD oil?
Vape devices are designed for thin e-liquids, not oils. Oil can clog or burn the coil, produce harsh vapour and leave oily residue that can be breathed into the lungs. Inhaling oils has been linked to a rare but serious lung condition called lipoid pneumonia.
What is the difference between a CBD tincture and CBD oil?
Traditionally a tincture is an alcohol-based extract, while CBD oil uses a carrier oil. Today most products sold as “tinctures” are actually oils. Either way, they are made to be taken by mouth.
Are CBD vapes legal in Ireland?
CBD e-liquids are covered by e-cigarette rules rather than food law, but any vape containing THC is illegal in Ireland. Be particularly careful with vapes sold as THC, HHC, THCP or Delta-8.
Is vaping CBD faster than taking oil?
Inhaled products act faster, but oil taken under the tongue usually starts working within 15 to 45 minutes, which is quick enough for most people and avoids the risks of vaping.
Do you sell CBD vapes?
No. We sell CBD oils, gummies, capsules and creams, all made to be taken by mouth or used on the skin.
Can I mix CBD oil with nicotine e-liquid?
No. Oil does not mix with PG/VG e-liquid. It separates, clogs the coil and can be inhaled as droplets. Keep CBD oil for taking by mouth.
How should I store CBD oil?
Keep it in its box or a cupboard, away from direct sunlight and heat, with the cap closed tightly. Unopened, it usually keeps for 12 to 24 months; check the best-before date.
Does vaping CBD show up on a drug test?
Drug tests look for THC. Many illegal or untested vape products contain THC or related compounds, so vaping them could cause a positive test as well as being illegal. A THC-free oil with a lab report is a far safer choice.
