A warm foot soak at the end of a long day is one of life’s simple pleasures. Add CBD and it sounds even better. But does CBD in a foot bath actually do anything, and what is the best way to use it? This guide gives you an easy home recipe, an honest look at the evidence, and the safety points to know first.
The short answer
- A foot soak is relaxing mainly because of the warm water and the time out. That part is real.
- CBD oil added to a bowl of water mostly floats on top, so little of it is likely to reach your skin.
- The better approach: enjoy a warm soak, dry your feet, then massage in a CBD cream or a few drops of CBD oil.
- People with diabetes, reduced feeling in their feet, poor circulation or broken skin should check with their GP or podiatrist before soaking.
What is a CBD foot soak?
A foot soak is simply a bowl of warm water, often with Epsom salts or essential oils, that you rest your feet in for 15 to 20 minutes. A CBD foot soak adds CBD, either as drops of oil, as CBD bath salts, or by finishing with a CBD cream or balm.
People use foot soaks as part of a wind-down routine, after a long day on their feet, after a run or a walk, or simply as a bit of self-care at the weekend.
Does CBD in a foot soak actually work?
Here is the honest answer. CBD is an oil-soluble compound, so it does not dissolve in water. If you put a few drops of CBD oil into a basin, most of it sits on the surface. Some will coat your skin as you lift your feet out, but there is no good research on how much CBD reaches the skin this way.
Research on CBD applied to the skin generally looks at creams, balms and gels, which keep the CBD in contact with the skin for longer. That is why we suggest using the soak for warmth and relaxation, then applying CBD directly afterwards, when your skin is clean and warm.
How to make a CBD foot soak at home
You will need: a basin big enough for both feet, warm water, a towel, and optionally Epsom salts and an essential oil.
- Fill the basin with comfortably warm water, around 35 to 40°C. Test it with your hand or elbow first.
- Add Epsom salts if you like: about half a cup, stirred until dissolved.
- Add an essential oil if you wish: 3 to 5 drops of lavender or peppermint, mixed into a teaspoon of carrier oil first so it disperses.
- Soak for 15 to 20 minutes. Put on some music, a podcast or just sit quietly.
- Dry your feet thoroughly, especially between the toes.
- Apply your CBD. Massage a small amount of CBD cream, or 3 to 5 drops of CBD oil, into the soles, heels and ankles.
- Finish with a pair of clean cotton socks to keep the moisture in.
Three foot soak recipes to try
The evening wind-down
Warm water, half a cup of Epsom salts and 3 drops of lavender oil mixed into a teaspoon of carrier oil. Soak for 15 minutes about an hour before bed, then massage in a little CBD cream and put on cotton socks. Pair it with a warm, caffeine-free drink and no screens.
After a run or a long walk
Warm (not hot) water with 3 drops of peppermint oil for a cooling feel. Soak for 10 to 15 minutes, stretch your calves and arches gently afterwards, then apply our Muscle & Joint Cream to your heels, arches and ankles.
Winter feet
Irish winters are hard on feet: cold, damp, and stuffed into boots all day. A short, warm soak followed by a thick moisturiser on the heels can help with dry skin. Skip the Epsom salts if your skin is very dry, as they can be drying.
Add a simple foot scrub
For softer skin, mix two tablespoons of sugar with one tablespoon of olive oil or coconut oil. After soaking, gently rub it over the heels and the balls of your feet for a minute, rinse and dry. Do not scrub broken, cracked or sore skin, and skip this if you have diabetes.
Making it a ritual
Part of what makes a foot soak relaxing is the time you set aside for it. Pick a regular slot, such as Sunday evening, put your phone in another room and give yourself 20 minutes. Many people find that small, regular rituals like this are easier to keep up than big changes, and CBD fits neatly into the same routine.
Foot soak ingredients explained
Epsom salts
Epsom salt is magnesium sulphate. It is a traditional bath addition, and many people find it pleasant. There is little good evidence that magnesium is absorbed through the skin in a meaningful amount, so think of it as part of the experience rather than a supplement.
Essential oils
Lavender is a popular choice for evening soaks and peppermint gives a cooling, fresh feel. Always dilute essential oils before adding them to water, use only a few drops, and avoid them if you have sensitive skin, are pregnant, or are using them around young children or pets.
CBD
For feet, a cream or balm is the most practical way to use CBD. Oil works too, but is messier. Choose a product that lists its CBD content in mg and has a lab report.
CBD cream vs CBD oil for your feet
| CBD cream or balm | CBD oil | |
|---|---|---|
| Made for | Skin | Taking by mouth (can also be used on skin) |
| Ease of use on feet | Easy, absorbs well | Messier, a little goes a long way |
| Best time | After a soak, shower or exercise | After a soak, or taken under the tongue as usual |
| Our pick | Muscle & Joint Cream | CBD Oil 10% Calm |
Who should avoid foot soaks?
Foot soaks are not right for everyone. Check with your GP or a podiatrist first if you:
- have diabetes or reduced feeling in your feet, as you may not notice if the water is too hot
- have poor circulation
- have open cuts, sores, blisters or a fungal infection
- have very dry or cracked skin, as long soaks can make this worse
If you have diabetes, the HSE advises checking your feet every day and seeing a professional about any problems. Never use a foot soak to treat a foot problem; see your GP or podiatrist instead.
A simple weekly foot care routine
- Wash and dry your feet daily, especially between the toes.
- Moisturise the heels and soles, avoiding between the toes.
- Cut toenails straight across.
- Wear well-fitting shoes and change socks daily.
- Treat yourself to a soak once or twice a week, followed by a CBD cream massage.
Many of our customers keep a tub of CBD Muscle & Joint Cream beside the bed or in their gym bag, as part of their routine after a long day on their feet.
Frequently asked questions
Can you put CBD oil in a foot bath?
You can, but most of it will float on the surface and very little is likely to reach your skin. You will get more out of your CBD by massaging a CBD cream or a few drops of oil into your feet after the soak.
How long should a foot soak last?
About 15 to 20 minutes is plenty. Longer soaks can dry out the skin.
How hot should the water be?
Comfortably warm, around 35 to 40°C. Always test it with your hand or elbow first, especially if you have reduced feeling in your feet.
Do Epsom salts really work?
Many people find an Epsom salt soak relaxing, but there is little good evidence that magnesium is absorbed through the skin in a meaningful amount. Enjoy it for the warmth and the ritual.
Can I use a CBD foot soak if I have diabetes?
Speak to your GP or podiatrist first. People with diabetes or reduced sensation in their feet are at higher risk of burns and skin damage, and are often advised against soaking.
How often can I do a foot soak?
Two or three times a week suits most people. Always dry your feet well, especially between the toes, and moisturise afterwards.
Which CBD product is best for feet?
A CBD cream or balm is the easiest to use on feet, as it is made for the skin. Our Muscle & Joint Cream contains 1000mg of CBD and 500mg of CBG.
Can I use CBD bath bombs or bath salts for my feet?
Yes, if you enjoy them, but check the CBD content in mg and the lab report, as many contain very little CBD. As with oil, a cream applied after the soak is the most direct way to use CBD on your feet.
Can I do a foot soak during pregnancy?
A plain warm foot soak is usually fine, but avoid very hot water and skip essential oils unless your midwife or GP says they are suitable. CBD is not recommended during pregnancy.
